The Anara Tower was a proposed supertall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, designed by the architectural firm Atkins. Announced in 2008, the project was envisioned as a prominent landmark in the city's Business Bay district, known for its ambitious high-rise developments.
Overview
The Anara Tower was planned to reach a height of approximately 600 meters (1,969 feet) and comprise 135 floors. It was intended as a mixed-use development, combining luxury residential apartments, commercial office spaces, and possibly a high-end hotel. The tower's design was distinctive and highly ambitious, aiming to integrate sustainable features into its iconic silhouette.
Design and Features
Atkins, the firm behind other notable Dubai structures like the Burj Al Arab, designed the Anara Tower with a striking and futuristic aesthetic. Its most distinguishing feature was a massive, three-bladed wind turbine structure located at its apex, resembling a giant propeller or a jewel. This turbine was intended to generate electricity for the building, symbolizing a commitment to renewable energy.
The tower's design also incorporated a series of "sky gardens" or open-air plazas, planned to be accessible to residents and visitors every 27 floors. These elevated green spaces were designed to offer panoramic views of Dubai and provide communal areas within the colossal structure. The overall form of the building featured three distinct wings that converged towards the central core, culminating in the iconic turbine.
Development and Status
The Anara Tower was one of many extravagant skyscraper projects proposed in Dubai during the economic boom of the mid-2000s. It was unveiled with considerable fanfare in 2008, showcasing the emirate's vision for architectural innovation and rapid expansion. However, the global financial crisis that began in late 2008 severely impacted Dubai's real estate market. As a result, many large-scale development projects, including the Anara Tower, were either scaled back, put on indefinite hold, or outright cancelled. The Anara Tower project ultimately did not proceed beyond the design and proposal phase and was never constructed. It remains a notable example of an ambitious unbuilt supertall skyscraper from that era.
