Description
Anania perflavalis is a moth in the family Crambidae. Adults possess a moderate wingspan, typically ranging between 20 mm and 25 mm. The forewings are predominantly pale yellow to light brown with subtle darker markings that form a faint transverse line; the hindwings are similar in coloration but usually lack the transverse line. Detailed morphological characters, such as the structure of the male genitalia, are consistent with other species of the genus Anania and have been used to confirm its taxonomic placement.
Distribution and Habitat
The species has been recorded in the Afrotropical region, with confirmed occurrences in:
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (Katanga Province)
- Tanzania (especially the eastern and coastal areas)
It inhabits tropical and subtropical forested environments, where host plants for its larvae are available.
Biology and Ecology
The larval host plants of A. perflavalis have not been definitively documented, but, as with many members of the Pyraustinae, larvae are presumed to feed on herbaceous or low‑shrub vegetation. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light, a behavior typical of many crambid moths. Flight periods have been reported throughout the year in regions where the climate remains warm and moist.
Taxonomic Notes
The species was originally described by George F. Hampson in 1918 under the name Polygrammodes perflavalis. Subsequent revisions of the Pyraustinae transferred it to the genus Anania, reflecting updated understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the group.
