Amy Domini

Amy Lee Domini (born January 25, 1950) is an American investment adviser, author, and a pioneer in socially responsible investing (SRI) and impact investing.

Early Life and Education

Domini was born on January 25, 1950, in New York City, to Margot Cabot (Colt), a teacher, and Enzo Vice Domini, who owned a food-processing business. She grew up in Newtown, Connecticut, and earned a BA in International and Comparative Studies from Boston University in 1973.

Career

After college, Domini began work as a copy clerk at the brokerage firm Tucker Anthony and rose to become a retail broker. She began working in socially responsible investing in 1980. In 1989, she co-founded KLD Research & Analytics with Peter Kinder and Steven Lydenberg, a research firm that analyzed corporations based on social and environmental criteria. In 1990, she helped create the Domini 400 Social Index (now the MSCI KLD 400 Social Index), a stock market index selected according to social and environmental standards. In 1991, she founded the Domini Social Impact Equity Fund (now the Domini Impact Equity Fund), an index fund based on that index. The fund's performance—rising 15.08 percent over its first ten years compared to 15.25 percent for the S&P 500—helped establish that socially responsible investing could be compatible with strong financial returns.

Domini is the founder and chair of Domini Impact Investments LLC. In 2005, Time magazine named her to its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Awards and Recognition

Domini has received numerous honors, including: the Reverend Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Business Ethics from the University of Notre Dame (2005); a citation from President Bill Clinton for work with the United Nations Foundation (2005); the Aaron Feuerstein Spirituality in Business Award (2003); and recognition by Barron's as one of the 30 most influential people in the mutual fund business (2000). She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has received honorary doctorates from Flagler College, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and Northeastern University.
