Amta I

Amta I is a community development block (CD block) in the Uluberia subdivision of Howrah district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The block forms an administrative unit for rural development and local governance and is headquartered at the town of Amta.

Geography
Amta I occupies an area of approximately 166 km² in the south‑western part of Howrah district. It is bounded by Amta II CD block to the east, Domjur and Jagatballavpur CD blocks to the north, and the districts of Howrah and Purba Medinipur to the south and west, respectively. The terrain is largely flat and part of the alluvial plains of the lower Ganges delta.

Administrative Structure
The block comprises 14 gram panchayats, which are the lowest tier of rural local self‑government. These include Amta, Bagnan, Bairampur, Bhandar, Bhatpara, Chakpara, Chandipur, Dhamua, Jangalmahal, Kalyanpur, Mahendrapur, Nandigram, Raghunathpur, and Samta. The Amta police station has jurisdiction over the block.

Demographics
According to the 2011 Census of India, Amta I CD block had a total population of 184,527, with a roughly equal gender distribution (51 % male, 49 % female). The literacy rate stood at 78 %, higher than the state average. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes together constituted about 28 % of the population. Bengali is the official language, with English used for official purposes.

Economy
The economy of Amta I is predominantly agrarian. Major crops include rice, jute, and various vegetables. The block also has a modest presence of small‑scale industries, particularly in agro‑processing and handicrafts. Agricultural labor forms a significant portion of the workforce, and a growing segment is engaged in non‑farm activities such as retail trade and services.

Infrastructure

  • Transportation: Amta I is served by the Amta branch line of the South Eastern Railway, connecting the area to Howrah and other regional centers. State highways and rural roads provide road connectivity to neighboring blocks and towns.
  • Education: The block hosts a number of primary and secondary schools, as well as a few higher secondary institutions. Educational facilities are administered by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
  • Healthcare: Primary health centres and sub‑centres are distributed across the block, providing basic medical services. The nearest major hospital is located in Uluberia.

Political Representation
Amta I falls within the Uluberia Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency and the Amta Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) constituency.
