Amroha district is an administrative district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Its headquarters is the city of Amroha.
Overview
Located in the western part of Uttar Pradesh, Amroha district forms part of the Moradabad division. The district covers an area of approximately 2,305 square kilometres (≈ 890 sq mi). According to the 2011 Census of India, the district had a population of about 1,840,000, with a density of roughly 800 persons per square kilometre. The predominant language spoken is Hindi, with Urdu also used by a significant minority. The district is governed by a District Magistrate/Collector, who reports to the state government.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Amroha” is traditionally associated with the town’s founder, Amro (or Amru), a local ruler said to have established the settlement in the medieval period. Historical records suggest the name may also derive from the presence of a large mango orchard (“am” meaning mango in Hindi) in the region, although this interpretation is not definitively verified.
