Amorpha ouachitensis, commonly known as the Ouachita leadplant or Ouachita false indigo, is a perennial deciduous shrub belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is a rare plant species endemic to a specific geographic range in the United States, primarily localized within the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Taxonomy and Description
The species was formally described by Robert Lynch Wilbur in 1954. It is distinguished from other members of the genus Amorpha by its specific morphological characteristics. The plant typically grows as a multi-stemmed shrub reaching heights of 1 to 2 meters. Its leaves are alternate and pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small, oval leaflets.
The inflorescence of Amorpha ouachitensis consists of dense, spike-like racemes located at the ends of branches. The flowers are notable for having only a single petal (the standard), which is a characteristic feature of the genus Amorpha. These petals are typically dark purple or indigo, accented by protruding orange or yellow anthers. The fruit is a small, glandular pod containing one or two seeds.
Distribution and Habitat
Amorpha ouachitensis has a highly restricted distribution. It is found almost exclusively in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. Its preferred habitat includes rocky woods, glades, bluffs, and the banks of high-gradient streams. It often grows in thin soils over sandstone, shale, or igneous rock outcrops.
Conservation Status
Due to its limited geographic range and specific habitat requirements, Amorpha ouachitensis is a subject of conservation interest. It is often categorized as a species of concern by state natural heritage programs. Threats to the species include habitat loss, changes in fire regimes, and competition from invasive species. Ecology
Like many other members of the Fabaceae family, Amorpha ouachitensis possesses a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria located in its root nodules. This allows the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor, rocky soils where other vegetation might struggle. It typically blooms in late spring, particularly in May and June, providing a nectar source for various pollinating insects.
