Amjad Bashir

Amjad Bashir (born 9 October 1969) is a British‑Pakistani politician affiliated with the Conservative Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the United Kingdom in the 2017 general election and served in the House of Commons until his resignation from Parliament in 2022. During his parliamentary tenure, Bashir held a junior ministerial position within the government, serving as a Parliamentary Under‑Secretary of State. He was also a member of parliamentary committees, including the Justice Select Committee.

Bashir was born in Pakistan and later immigrated to the United Kingdom, where he established a career in business before entering politics. His parliamentary work focused on issues such as community cohesion, criminal justice, and trade relations, particularly concerning South‑Asian diaspora communities.

In early 2020, Bashir became the subject of a controversy involving allegations that his staff had accessed the telephone messages of a political opponent. Following a police investigation, he resigned from his ministerial post and later stepped down from his role as an MP. The scandal highlighted concerns over privacy and the conduct of political staff within the UK parliamentary system.
