Amato Ronconi

Amato Ronconi (c. 1225 – 31 August 1310) was an Italian layman and merchant who is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a Blessed. He is noted for his extensive charitable works, particularly the care of the poor, sick, and travelers.

Early life

Amato Ronconi was born in Cesena, a city in the Romagna region of northern Italy, into a prosperous mercantile family. While the precise details of his family background and early education are not extensively documented, contemporary hagiographical sources indicate that he entered the family trade as a merchant and traveled widely on commercial ventures.

Charitable activity

According to the accounts of his contemporaries and later hagiographers, Ronconi devoted a substantial portion of his resources to acts of charity. He is reported to have:

  • Established a hospice at his residence for pilgrims and the indigent.
  • Distributed alms and provisions to the poor, especially during times of famine or plague.
  • Provided personal care to the sick, including nursing and the arrangement of medical assistance.

His reputation for generosity spread throughout the region, and he became a model of lay piety in medieval Italy.

Veneration

Amato Ronconi’s reputation for holiness persisted after his death on 31 August 1310. The Catholic Church formally recognized his sanctity through the following steps:

  • Beatification: Ronconi was beatified by Pope Clement XI on 31 December 1738.
  • Feast day: His liturgical feast is celebrated on 31 August, the anniversary of his death.

He has not been canonized; thus, his official title within the Church remains “Blessed.”

Legacy

Blessed Amato Ronconi is regarded as a patron of merchants, travelers, and the poor. Various churches and confraternities in the Romagna region maintain altars or chapels dedicated to his memory, and his life continues to be cited in discussions of lay involvement in medieval Christian charity.

Note: While the general outline of Amato Ronconi’s life and beatification is documented in Catholic hagiographical literature, specific details regarding his early biography and the full extent of his charitable institutions are limited, and some historical sources provide only brief or anecdotal information.
