Morphological description
Amanita virosa is a basidiomycete mushroom characterized by a smooth, white to ivory cap ranging from 5–15 cm in diameter. The cap is initially convex, later flattening with a slight central umbo. The surface is glabrous and may develop a faint, powdery coating with age. The gills are free, crowded, and white. The stipe (stem) measures 8–20 cm in length and 1–2 cm in thickness, bearing a white, membranous, skirt‑like annulus near the apex and a bulbous base encircled by a universal veil remnants forming a volva that is typically sack‑shaped and white. Spores are elliptical, smooth, and amyloid, measuring approximately 8–12 µm × 5–7 µm.

Habitat and distribution
The species is mycorrhizal, forming symbiotic relationships with a variety of broad‑leaf trees, especially birch (Betula spp.), beech (Fagus spp.), and oak (Quercus spp.). Fruiting bodies appear on the ground in mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, typically from late summer to early autumn. A. virosa is native to Europe, with confirmed occurrences in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, and parts of the Mediterranean region. Isolated reports exist from North Africa.

Toxicology
All parts of Amanita virosa contain high concentrations of amatoxins, principally α‑amanitin, as well as β‑amanitin and phallotoxins. Ingestion leads to severe hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Clinical onset of symptoms usually occurs 6–24 hours post‑ingestion and includes abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, followed by a latent phase and subsequent fulminant liver failure. The mortality rate without prompt medical intervention can exceed 50 %. Treatment protocols involve supportive care, early administration of activated charcoal, intravenous hydration, and specific antidotes such as silibinin or N‑acetylcysteine, though efficacy varies. Liver transplantation may be required in cases of irreversible hepatic damage.

Identification and safety considerations
Due to its entirely white morphology, A. virosa is easily confused with edible white mushrooms such as Agaricus spp. or Morchella spp., especially by inexperienced foragers. Key distinguishing features include the presence of a sack‑like volva at the stem base, a smooth white cap lacking warts or scales, and a white annulus. However, visual identification alone can be unreliable; mycologists recommend microscopic examination of spores and chemical testing for amatoxins when precise identification is required.

Conservation status
No global conservation assessment (e.g., IUCN Red List) has been published for Amanita virosa. The species is not considered threatened and appears to be locally common in suitable habitats throughout its native range.
