Amadis Jamyn

Definition
Amadis Jamyn (1540 – 25 May 1593) was a French Renaissance poet, translator, and humanist, known for his association with the literary circle La Pléiade and his friendship with the poet Pierre de Ronsard.

Overview
Born in Saumur, France, Jamyn studied law at the University of Poitiers before turning to literature. He became a prominent member of the French literary movement known as La Pléiade, which sought to elevate French poetry by imitating classical Greek and Latin models. Jamlyn’s poetry was published in several collections, most notably Les Odes (1573) and Les Amours. He also translated works from Greek and Latin, contributing to the diffusion of classical literature in France. Jamyn served as a court poet under King Charles IX and later Henry III, and he held various administrative positions, including a role as a magistrate in his native Saumur. He died in Paris in 1593.

Etymology/Origin
The given name “Amadis” is a variant of “Amadeus,” derived from the Latin amare (“to love”) and Deus (“God”), meaning “lover of God” or “loved by God.” The surname “Jamyn” is of French origin, possibly a diminutive or regional form of “Jamain” or “Jaume,” itself derived from the name “James.” No further etymological developments specific to the individual are documented.
