The Alpe Gera Dam (Italian: Diga Alpe Gera) is a concrete gravity dam on the Cormor River in a lateral valley of Valmalenco, 17 km (11 mi) northeast of Sondrio in the Lombardy region of Italy. It stands 174 m (571 ft) tall, has a crest length of 528 m (1,732 ft), and contains a total volume of 1,700,000 m³ of concrete. The dam impounds a reservoir with a total capacity of 68,100,000 m³ and a normal elevation of 2,125 m (6,972 ft) above sea level.
Construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The dam supports a 35 MW hydroelectric power station. It is notable for the innovative concrete placement techniques used during its construction: instead of being poured into conventional monoliths, the concrete was poured in layers using a lean mix, settled with immersed vibrators, and then contraction joints were cut into each layer. These methods proved cost-saving and were instrumental in the development of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) in dam construction.
