The municipal seat, also named Almoloya del Río, lies approximately 55 km southeast of Mexico City. According to the 2020 Mexican Census, the municipality had a population of around 31,500 inhabitants, while the town itself accounted for roughly 13,000 residents. The municipality covers an area of about 90 km² (35 mi²) and is part of the Mezquital Valley region. Its economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock raising, and small‑scale commerce. The municipality is traversed by the Río del Mezquital, which contributes to the local irrigation system.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Almoloya” derives from the Nahuatl word ālmo·loya or ālmo·loyān, meaning “place of the water source” or “where water springs.” The suffix “del Río” (Spanish for “of the river”) was added to distinguish it from other towns named Almoloya and to reference its proximity to the local river.
