Almeda Mall is a regional shopping mall located in southeast Houston, Texas, at the intersection of Interstate 45 (Gulf Freeway) and Almeda-Genoa Road. Opened in 1968, it was one of Houston's earliest fully enclosed shopping centers and has served as a significant retail hub for the surrounding communities for over five decades.
History
Developed by Weingarten Realty Investors, Almeda Mall officially opened its doors on October 2, 1968. Its original anchor tenants included major department stores such as Sears, Foley's, JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward. The mall's architecture reflected the trends of its era, designed as a large, enclosed, climate-controlled environment offering a wide variety of shops and services under one roof. Over its history, the mall has undergone several renovations and adaptations to remain competitive and meet evolving retail demands.
Retailers and Features
At its peak, Almeda Mall housed numerous specialty stores, a food court, and entertainment options. Over the years, its anchor lineup has seen changes due to corporate mergers, bankruptcies, and strategic decisions by retailers. Foley's department store eventually became Macy's. Montgomery Ward closed in the early 2000s when the chain ceased operations, and its space was subsequently redeveloped for other tenants. Sears, a long-standing original anchor, closed its store in 2018 as part of the company's nationwide closures. Current or recent major tenants have included JCPenney, Macy's, and Burlington. The mall continues to provide a mix of retail, dining, and service establishments.
Location and Impact
Situated in southeast Houston, Almeda Mall occupies a strategic location along a major interstate highway, making it accessible to a large residential population. For many years, it served as a primary commercial and social center for the Almeda, Genoa, and surrounding areas. Like many older regional malls, Almeda Mall has faced challenges from newer developments, changing demographics, and the rise of e-commerce, leading to various efforts to revitalize and re-tenant the property. It remains an active commercial property, managed by Property Commerce, striving to adapt to the contemporary retail landscape.
