Alijan Ibragimov (born 1970 – died 3 February 2021) was a Kazakhstani businessman and billionaire investor, most prominently known as one of the co‑founders and principal shareholders of Eurasian Natural Resources Corp (ENRC), a diversified natural resources mining and processing group. He, together with Patokh Chodiev and Alexander Mashkevich, was often referred to as the “Kazakh Trio,” a consortium that played a major role in the development of the mining sector in Kazakhstan and the broader Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
Early life and education
Ibragimov was born in Kazakhstan to a family of Uzbek origin. Details about his early education and formative years are limited in publicly available sources.
Business career
In the late 1990s, Ibragimov, Chodiev, and Mashkevich combined their resources to acquire and consolidate a number of mining assets in Kazakhstan, particularly in the sectors of copper, zinc, and iron ore. Their holdings were merged under the umbrella of ENRC, which was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2007. Ibragimov served on the board of ENRC and held significant equity stakes, contributing to the company’s expansion into Africa and Europe.
Wealth and recognition
During the 2010s, Ibragimov’s net worth was frequently reported by financial publications such as Forbes, placing him among the richest individuals in Kazakhstan and the CIS. His wealth was largely derived from his holdings in ENRC and related mining ventures.
Legal and regulatory matters
ENRC faced scrutiny from regulators in the United Kingdom and other jurisdictions concerning corporate governance, financial reporting, and alleged corrupt practices. The company underwent restructuring, and in 2013 it was taken private and rebranded as the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG). Ibragimov’s involvement in the legal proceedings pertaining to ENRC was limited to his role as a shareholder; no personal criminal charges were publicly recorded against him.
Philanthropy and personal life
Public information indicates that Ibragimov engaged in charitable activities, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare within Kazakhstan, though specific initiatives are not extensively documented. He was married and had children; further personal details remain private.
