Ali El Selmi

Ali El Selmi (Arabic: علي السلمي; born c. 1945) is an Egyptian academic and politician. He is best known for his role as Deputy Prime Minister for Democratic Transition in Egypt following the 2011 revolution.

Biography and Career Ali El Selmi had a distinguished academic career before entering politics. He served as a Professor of Political Science and was the former Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, one of Egypt's most prestigious academic institutions. His academic background focused on political theory and governance, making him a prominent voice in discussions about Egypt's political future.

Following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, El Selmi was appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Democratic Transition in the interim government led by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf. In this crucial role, he was tasked with overseeing the transition process towards a new democratic system, including constitutional reform and preparations for parliamentary and presidential elections.

Al-Selmi Document One of his most notable contributions during the transitional period was the proposal of a set of constitutional principles known as the "Al-Selmi Document" in October 2011. This document aimed to outline the framework for Egypt's new constitution, particularly regarding the balance of power between elected officials and the military, as well as the role of religious law. The document sparked considerable debate and controversy, with some secular and liberal groups supporting its principles to protect civil liberties and prevent a solely Islamist-dominated parliament, while Islamist parties largely rejected it as an attempt to pre-empt the role of an elected parliament in drafting the constitution. The controversy surrounding the document ultimately led to its withdrawal, but it highlighted the deep divisions within Egyptian society regarding the future of its governance.

Later Career After his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister, El Selmi continued to be an influential political commentator and analyst, frequently appearing in media to discuss Egyptian politics and the challenges of democratic transition. His academic expertise and practical experience in government provide him with a unique perspective on the complexities of the region.
