Definition
Alfredo Guzzoni (16 February 1886 – 13 October 1967) was an Italian general of the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito). He is chiefly remembered for his command roles during World War I and World II, particularly his leadership of Italian forces defending Rome following the Armistice of Cassibile in September 1943.
Overview
Born in Milan, Kingdom of Italy, Guzzoni entered the Royal Military Academy at Modena and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He saw active service on the Italian Front during World I, where he earned several decorations for bravery. In the interwar period, he attended the Army War School and held various staff and command positions, including command of the 7th Infantry Division “Lupi di Toscana”.
During World II, Guzzoni rose to the rank of lieutenant general (generale di corpo d'armata) and held significant operational commands. In 1942 he was appointed commander of the Ninth Army, responsible for the defense of central Italy. After the announcement of the armistice with the Allies on 8 September 1943, Guzzoni was placed in charge of the “Army of Rome”, tasked with resisting German forces attempting to occupy the capital. His efforts were ultimately unsuccessful; German units seized Rome on 10 September 1943, and Guzzoni was captured and interned as a prisoner of war until the end of the conflict.
Following liberation, Guzzoni returned to Italy, where he retired from active military service. He lived in Milan until his death in 1967.
