Alfonso “Alfie” Yuchengco (September 13, 1923 – July 9, 2010) was a Filipino entrepreneur, diplomat, and philanthropist. He was the founder and chairman of the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) and served as the Philippine ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from 1990 to 1993.
Overview
Born in Manila to a Chinese‑Filipino family, Yuchengco pursued higher education at the University of the Philippines, earning a degree in Business Administration. He entered the private sector in the 1950s, initially working in the insurance and banking industries. In 1964 he founded the Yuchengco Group of Companies, a diversified conglomerate with interests in banking (Metrobank), insurance (Philippine Prudential), real estate, education, and media. Under his leadership, Metrobank grew to become one of the Philippines’ largest commercial banks.
Yuchengco’s public service included his appointment as the Philippines’ ambassador to China (1990‑1993), during which he worked to strengthen bilateral trade and cultural ties. He also held leadership positions in various industry associations, such as the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP).
A noted philanthropist, Yuchengco established the Yuchengco Foundation, which supports education, health, and cultural initiatives. He was instrumental in founding the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and contributed to the development of the University of the Philippines’ Center for Development Communication.
He received numerous honors, including the Order of Sikatuna (Grand Cross) and the Legion of Honor from the French government. Yuchengco passed away in 2010 at the age of 86.
