Alessandro Arrigoni (bishop)

Alessandro Arrigoni (1592 – 21 November 1674) was an Italian Roman Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of Parma from 1647 to 1674 and as Bishop of Asti from 1644 to 1647.

Biography

Born in Bologna, Italy, in 1592, Alessandro Arrigoni began his ecclesiastical career following his ordination to the priesthood. Details of his early education and initial assignments are not extensively documented, but he rose through the ranks of the Church.

On 13 July 1644, Pope Urban VIII appointed Arrigoni as the Bishop of Asti, a diocese in the Piedmont region of Italy. He was consecrated as bishop on 24 July 1644, by Cardinal Giovanni Giacomo Panciroli, with the assistance of Alfonso Manzanedo de Quiñones, Titular Archbishop of Cæsarea in Cappadocia, and Faustus Poli, Titular Archbishop of Amasea, serving as co-consecrators.

Arrigoni's tenure in Asti was relatively brief. On 28 January 1647, Pope Innocent X transferred him to the Diocese of Parma, a more prominent see in the Emilia-Romagna region. He served as Bishop of Parma for nearly three decades, until his death.

During his episcopacy in Parma, Arrigoni oversaw the spiritual and administrative needs of his diocese. His period coincided with significant post-Tridentine reforms within the Catholic Church, focusing on pastoral care, catechesis, and the discipline of the clergy. While no major historical events or controversies are uniquely associated with his time in Parma, his long tenure indicates a stable period of episcopal leadership.

Alessandro Arrigoni died in Parma on 21 November 1674, at the age of 82.
