Alderdice Peak

Alderdice Peak is a prominent mountain located in the Purcell Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. It is situated within the expansive Bugaboo Provincial Park, an area renowned for its rugged granite spires and glacial features, popular among mountaineers and climbers.

Geography

Alderdice Peak stands at an approximate elevation of 2,958 meters (9,705 feet) above sea level. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 50°49′N 116°54′W. The peak is characterized by its steep rock faces and the presence of permanent snow and ice fields, typical of the higher reaches of the Purcell Mountains. It forms part of the Vowell Group within the northern Purcell Mountains.

Etymology

The mountain was named in 1916 by Arthur O. Wheeler, a Canadian land surveyor, photographer, and mountaineer, who was a key figure in the early exploration and mapping of the Canadian Rockies. Wheeler named the peak after the character Alderdice from Rudyard Kipling's 1891 novel, The Light That Failed. This naming convention, drawing from literary characters, was common among early explorers of the region.

Significance

As part of the Bugaboo Provincial Park, Alderdice Peak contributes to a landscape recognized for its exceptional alpine environment and challenging climbing routes. While not as frequently climbed as some of its more famous neighbors like Bugaboo Spire, it remains a notable feature within this significant mountain range and a part of the greater Columbia Mountains system.
