Alabel is a first-class municipality and the capital of the province of Sarangani, Philippines. It is located on the southeastern coast of Mindanao, specifically situated in the eastern part of Sarangani Bay.
Geography Alabel covers a significant land area characterized by a diverse landscape. It features a coastline along Sarangani Bay, providing access to marine resources, and extends inland to include agricultural plains and undulating hills that rise into mountainous terrain. The municipality is bordered by General Santos City to the west, the municipality of Malungon to the north, and the municipalities of Glan and Malapatan to the east.
History Alabel was originally part of the vast municipality of Glan. It was established as an independent municipality on June 15, 1953, by virtue of Executive Order No. 603 issued by President Elpidio Quirino. When Sarangani was carved out as a separate province from South Cotabato in 1992, Alabel was designated as its provincial capital due to its central location and developing infrastructure.
Demographics The population of Alabel is diverse, composed of various ethnic groups. Indigenous communities such as the B'laan and Teduray are among the original inhabitants. A significant portion of the population consists of migrants from other parts of the Philippines, primarily from Luzon and Visayas, who settled in the area. The predominant languages spoken include Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Tagalog, and the indigenous B'laan language.
Economy Alabel's economy is predominantly agricultural. Major crops cultivated include coconut, corn, rice, bananas, and various fruits. Aquaculture and fishing also play a vital role, especially with its coastal proximity. The municipality serves as a commercial and trade center for the eastern part of Sarangani province, facilitated by its role as the capital and its access to transportation networks. Small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in retail and services, contribute to the local economy.
Government and Administration As the provincial capital, Alabel hosts the provincial government offices of Sarangani. The municipality itself is governed by a mayor, vice-mayor, and Sangguniang Bayan (municipal council) members, who are elected to manage local affairs, public services, and development initiatives. It is politically subdivided into a number of barangays, which are the smallest administrative divisions in the Philippines.
