Alaa Satir (Arabic: آلاء ساتر; born 1990) is a Sudanese visual artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and activist known for her murals, cartoons, and illustrations that address women's rights, social justice, and political issues in contemporary Sudan.
Early life and education
Satir was born in Khartoum, Sudan. She graduated with a degree in architecture from the University of Khartoum, after which she transitioned to a career in visual arts, teaching herself illustration and graphic design.
Artistic career
Satir’s work combines bold graphic styles with socially engaged content. She gained prominence during the Sudanese Revolution of 2018‑2019, creating murals and street art that highlighted the pivotal role of women in the protests. Her first solo exhibition, Morning Doodles (2017), explored themes of feminism, social media, and politics. Since then, she has participated in numerous exhibitions and public art projects, including collaborations with NGOs, international art collectives, and initiatives such as Cartooning for Peace and the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN).
Activism
Through her art, Satir advocates for gender equality, freedom of expression, and democratic reforms. She has spoken publicly about the challenges faced by Sudanese women under the former regime of Omar al‑Bashir and uses her illustrations as tools to raise awareness and inspire civic engagement.
