Al-Zarrar tank

Definition
The Al-Zarrar is a Pakistani main battle tank (MBT) that represents an extensive upgrade of the Chinese Type 59 platform, incorporating modern firepower, protection, and mobility improvements.

Overview
Developed by the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Organization (DESTO), the Al-Zarrar entered service in the early 2000s. It was designed to extend the operational life of Pakistan’s existing Type 59 fleet while providing capabilities comparable to contemporary MBTs. The tank has been produced in limited numbers, primarily for service in the Pakistan Army’s Armoured Corps, and has been exported in small quantities to allied nations.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Al‑Zarrar” (Arabic: الزرار) translates to “the fighter” or “the warrior.” The designation reflects Pakistan’s practice of assigning Arabic or Urdu names to indigenous weapon systems to convey strength and combat readiness.
