Al-Ahbash

Definition
Al‑Ahbash (Arabic: الأحباش, al‑ʾAḥbāsh, literally “the Ethiopians”) is a neo‑traditionalist Sufi religious movement and, in Lebanon, a political party. It is formally known as the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (Arabic: جمعية المشاريع الخيرية الإسلامية, Jamʿīyah al‑Mashārīʿ al‑Khayrīyah al‑ʾIslāmīyah, AICP).

Overview
Founded in the mid‑1980s in West Beirut, Al‑Ahbash follows the teachings of the Ethiopian scholar Abdullah al‑Harari. The movement blends Sunni and Shia theological elements with Sufi spiritual practices, adhering to the Shafiʿī school of fiqh, Ashʿarī creed, and the Rifaʽī Sufi order. It emphasizes charitable work, education, and political quietism, while maintaining a strong anti‑Salafi stance, criticizing figures such as Ibn Taymiyyah, Muhammad ibn Abd al‑Wahhab, and Sayyid Qutb.

In Lebanon, Al‑Ahbash grew rapidly in the 1990s with support from the Syrian government, becoming one of the largest Sunni religious organizations in the country. It holds seats in the Lebanese Parliament as part of the March 8 Alliance. The movement has also established branches and institutions abroad, particularly in Europe and North America.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Al‑Ahbash” derives from the Arabic term for “the Ethiopians,” a reference to the Ethiopian origin of its founding scholar, Abdullah al‑Harari, who emigrated from Ethiopia (historically called al‑Ḥabāsh).
