Al Darawish was an Italian world‑music group founded in Bari in 1988. The ensemble brought together musicians of diverse cultural backgrounds—members hailed from the Apulia region of Italy, Palestine, and Greece—and they initially met while studying at the University of Bari.
Name and linguistic focus
The name “Al Darawish” derives from the Arabic term darwīsh (درويش), meaning “simple people” or “poor”. Their lyrics were predominantly written in Arabic and Italian, but also incorporated Greek, French, Spanish, English, and Latin.
Musical style
The band blended traditional Mediterranean folk elements with contemporary electric instrumentation, creating a style often described as “Mediterranean ethno‑rock.” Their repertoire combined instruments such as the twelve‑string guitar, bouzouki, darbuka, riq, bendir, accordion, violin, and various percussive devices.
Career and releases
Al Darawish released two studio albums: the eponymous Al Darawish (1993) and Radio Dervish (1996). In 1997 the group disbanded; part of the lineup formed the group Radiodervish, while other members created the band X‑Darawish.

During their active years the group performed in more than 500 concerts, including notable appearances at:
