Aksakov is an impact crater on the planet Mercury. The crater was named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1976 in honor of Sergey Aksakov (1791–1859), a noted Russian writer and memoirist. As with other Mercurian craters, Aksakov is a circular depression formed by the collision of a meteoroid or cometary fragment with the planetary surface.
The naming follows the IAU’s convention for Mercurian craters, which are designated after deceased artists, musicians, painters, and authors who have been historically recognized for more than fifty years. Official details about the crater’s precise geographic coordinates, diameter, and morphological characteristics are recorded in the IAU’s Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, but those specific measurements are not included here due to a lack of readily verifiable data in publicly available encyclopedic sources.
