Akron Racers

The Akron Racers were a professional women's softball team based in Akron, Ohio, United States. The franchise competed in two successive leagues for elite women's fast‑pitch softball: the Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL) from its inception in 1999 until the league suspended operations in 2001, and later the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), the successor professional league, from its re‑formation in 2004 until the team ceased operations in 2017.

History

  • Founding and early years (1999‑2001): Established as one of the original six teams of the WPSL, the Racers played home games at the University of Akron’s War Memorial Stadium. The league folded after the 2001 season.
  • NPF participation (2004‑2017): When the NPF began play in 2004, the Racers were re‑established as one of its charter members. Their home venue from 2005 onward was Firestone Stadium in Akron, a facility owned by the City of Akron and the Akron Sports Commission.

Performance and achievements

  • The Racers captured the NPF championship once, winning the Cowles Cup in the 2005 season.
  • They qualified for the postseason on multiple occasions, finishing as league runners‑up in 2006 and 2014.
  • Throughout their tenure, the team maintained a competitive record, often ranking in the upper half of the league standings.

Notable players and personnel

  • Stacie Lundquist – pitcher selected to the United States national team and a multiple‑time NPF All‑Star.
  • Megan Willis – catcher renowned for defensive skill and contribution to the 2005 championship run.
  • Mike Duly – served as head coach from 2005 to 2012, guiding the team to its sole league title.

Community involvement
The Racers engaged in local outreach programs, including youth softball clinics, school visits, and charitable fundraising events in the Akron metropolitan area. Their presence contributed to the promotion of women's sports and fast‑pitch softball in Ohio.

Disbandment
Facing financial challenges and declining league support, the franchise announced the suspension of operations in early 2017. The NPF subsequently ceased to list the Akron Racers as an active team, and the organization was formally dissolved later that year.

Legacy
The Akron Racers are remembered for their role in advancing professional women’s softball in the United States, providing a platform for elite athletes, and fostering community engagement with the sport. Their 2005 championship remains a notable achievement in the history of the NPF.
