Ak Astana-Baba

Ak Astana‑Baba (Uzbek: Oqostona bobo maqbarasi; also rendered in Cyrillic as Оқостона бобо мақбараси) is a mausoleum dating from the 10th–11th centuries located in the Sariosiyo District of the Surxondaryo Region in southern Uzbekistan. The monument is situated at coordinates 38°18′04″ N, 68°01′08″ E.

The structure is a modest, square‑plan mausoleum built of baked brick, characteristic of early medieval Central Asian funerary architecture. Although the precise identity of the interred individual is uncertain, local tradition associates the site with a figure known as “Astana‑Baba,” who is sometimes linked to early Islamic religious heritage in the region. The mausoleum has been recognized for its cultural value and was placed on Uzbekistan’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on 1 June 1996 under the cultural category.

Ak Astana‑Baba forms part of the broader architectural landscape of the Silk Road, reflecting the diffusion of Islamic funerary practices and regional building techniques during the early medieval period. The site continues to attract pilgrims and visitors, serving both as a place of local religious devotion and as a point of interest for scholars of Central Asian history and architecture.
