The Aiud River (Râul Aiud in Romanian) is a left tributary of the Mureș River in Alba County, Romania. It is a relatively small but locally significant watercourse in the Transylvanian region.
Geography
The Aiud River originates in the Trascău Mountains, a sub-group of the Apuseni Mountains, in western Romania. Its upper course flows through the protected area of the Râmeț Gorges (Cheile Râmeților), an important natural landmark known for its dramatic limestone formations and biodiversity. The river generally flows in a southeasterly direction through a valley characterized by a mix of forested areas, agricultural lands, and small rural settlements.Course
The river has an approximate length of 32 kilometers (20 miles) and drains a basin area of about 200 square kilometers (77 square miles). After emerging from the mountainous terrain, it flows through several communes and villages, including Râmeț and Livezile. Its most notable passage is through the city of Aiud, from which the river derives its name.
