Agim Zajmi

Agim Zajmi (28 November 1936 – 3 November 2013) was an Albanian painter, scenographer, and professor, recognized as one of the most prominent figures in Albanian visual and theatrical arts. He received the title People's Artist of Albania for his contributions to painting and stage design.

Overview
Born in Tirana, Zajmi completed his higher education in painting and scenography‑costumography at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, graduating in 1961. He began his professional career the same year as a scenographer for the Opera and Ballet Theater of Tirana and subsequently worked extensively with the Tirana National Theater, as well as national theatres in Pristina (Kosovo), Skopje (North Macedonia), and Montenegro.

From 1978 until his death, Zajmi served as a professor at the Academy of Music and Arts of Albania in Tirana, later becoming dean of the Albanian Academy of Belle Arts. He founded the scenography studies program there, training generations of Albanian scenographers. Over a forty‑year academic career, he held the presidency of the Nationwide Figurative Artists’ Association, fostering collaboration among Albanian artists across the Balkans and the diaspora.

Zajmi produced approximately 800 paintings and designed more than 300 theatrical scenographies. His works have been exhibited in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, and other countries. Forty of his pieces are part of the collection of the Tirana National Art Gallery, with additional works held in public and private collections worldwide.
