Afraflacilla is a genus of jumping spiders within the family Salticidae. It was first described by arachnologists Berland and Millot in 1941. The genus is classified under the tribe Chrysillini in the subfamily Salticinae.
Taxonomy and Systematics
The genus Afraflacilla has a complex taxonomic history, having been synonymized with Pseudicius by some researchers in the past. However, more recent molecular and morphological studies have re-established Afraflacilla as a distinct genus. It is closely related to genera such as Pseudicius and Festucula.
Morphology
Spiders of this genus typically possess elongated, slender, and somewhat flattened bodies. This morphology is an adaptation for living in narrow crevices, such as under tree bark or in rock fissures. They are generally small to medium-sized spiders, often displaying cryptic coloration—shades of grey, brown, or black—that allows them to blend in with their environment.
Distribution and Habitat
The genus has a wide geographical distribution, with species recorded across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia (including India, Pakistan, and China). At least one species, Afraflacilla epiblemoides, is known to occur in parts of Europe. Their habitats primarily include the trunks of trees and rocky outcrops, where they hunt for small insects.
