Early Life and Career

Born in Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands, Adri van der Poel turned professional in 1981. He quickly established himself as a powerful rider capable of performing well in a variety of race types, from demanding one-day classics to multi-stage tours and the specialized sport of cyclo-cross.

Road Cycling Career

Van der Poel was a prominent figure in the professional road cycling peloton throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. His achievements include victories in several prestigious races:

  • Classics: He won Liège–Bastogne–Liège, one of cycling's five Monuments, in 1988. Other notable classic victories include the Clásica de San Sebastián in 1985, two wins at the Brabantse Pijl (1985, 1991), and the Grand Prix des Amériques in 1990.

He is married to Corinne Poulidor, the daughter of the legendary French cyclist Raymond Poulidor, making him Poulidor's son-in-law. His sons, Mathieu van der Poel and David van der Poel, have both followed in his footsteps to become successful professional cyclists. Mathieu, in particular, has achieved global recognition as one of the most dominant and versatile riders of his generation, excelling in road, cyclo-cross, and mountain biking.
