Admiralty, Singapore

Admiralty is a residential neighbourhood and subzone within the Sembawang Planning Area in the North Region of Singapore. It is situated between the Woodlands and Sembawang planning areas, bounded roughly by Sembawang Road to the east, the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) to the south, and the Strait of Johor to the north.

Geography and Administration

  • Country: Singapore
  • Region: North Region
  • Planning Area: Sembawang
  • Subzone: Admiralty

History
The name “Admiralty” derives from the historic British naval presence in the area. During the colonial period, the Singapore Naval Base, constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, included a command complex known as Admiralty House. The surrounding residential developments that were later built by the Housing & Development Board (HDB) retained the historic name.

Urban Development

  • The neighbourhood consists predominantly of HDB public housing estates built in the 1990s and early 2000s.
  • Notable residential estates include Admiralty Court, Admiralty Garden, and the newer Admiralty Park precinct.

Transportation

  • MRT: Admiralty MRT Station (NS10) on the North‑South Line opened on 10 February 1996, providing rapid rail connectivity to the city centre and northern Singapore.
  • Roads: The Pan‑Island Expressway (PIE) runs along the southern edge of the subzone, linking it to the central expressway network.
  • Bus Services: Several public bus routes serve Admiralty, including services 167, 168, 858, and 859, connecting the area to Woodlands, Sembawang, and the broader northern region.

Amenities and Facilities

  • Shopping: Admiralty Shopping Centre and Admiralty Plaza (formerly Admiralty Plaza Shopping Centre) host supermarkets, food and beverage outlets, and essential services.
  • Education: The neighbourhood is served by primary schools such as Admiralty Primary School and secondary schools including Riverside Secondary School (located in the adjacent Woodlands area).
  • Recreation: Admiralty Park, a landscaped public park adjacent to the MRT station, provides open space, jogging paths, and a playground.
  • Healthcare: The nearest public polyclinic is Woodlands Polyclinic; a private medical clinic is also present within Admiralty Plaza.

Demographics
According to the Singapore Department of Statistics (2020 Census), the Sembawang Planning Area had a total population of approximately 96,000. The Admiralty subzone, being primarily residential, contributes a significant proportion of this figure; however, precise subzone‑level population data are not publicly disaggregated.

Future Developments
The Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Master Plan (URAP) envisions continued densification of the northern region, with potential upgrades to transport infrastructure and additional mixed‑use developments near Admiralty MRT Station. Specific project details are subject to future planning approvals.
