ActiveVOS

ActiveVOS is a proprietary business process management (BPM) suite originally developed by Active Endpoints and later marketed by Informatica. The platform enables the modeling, execution, and monitoring of business processes using industry‑standard notations and execution languages.

Overview

ActiveVOS provides a graphical design environment for creating process definitions in BPMN 2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation) and supports execution of those processes via a WS‑BPEL 2.0 (Web Services Business Process Execution Language) engine. In addition to core BPEL support, the engine implements the BPEL4People specification, allowing human‑centric tasks to be managed through task lists. The suite is offered as a proprietary software product and runs on multiple operating systems.

Architecture and Components

Component Function
ActiveVOS Designer An Eclipse‑based integrated development environment (IDE) for modeling BPMN 2.0 processes, defining BPEL logic, and configuring human‑task workflows.
ActiveVOS Server The runtime engine that executes WS‑BPEL 2.0 processes, handles service orchestration, and manages BPEL4People human tasks.
ActiveVOS Central A web‑based console for administration, monitoring, and management of deployed processes, users, and system resources.
ActiveVOS Repository Stores process definitions, version histories, and configuration metadata.

The suite integrates with enterprise service buses (ESBs), web services, and other middleware components, allowing processes to invoke external services and expose services for consumption.

History

ActiveVOS was first released in 2009 by Active Endpoints, a software company focused on BPM solutions. The product’s initial stable release (version 8.0) appeared in September 2010. Over time, the suite was incorporated into Informatica’s portfolio of process‑automation tools, and subsequent releases added features such as improved BPMN 2.0 modeling, support for newer Java runtimes, and enhanced security controls.

Adoption and Use Cases

ActiveVOS is employed in industries that require formalized workflow automation, including finance, telecommunications, and government. Typical use cases involve order processing, claim handling, and data‑quality workflows where a combination of automated service orchestration and human task management is needed. The product is often deployed on‑premises, though cloud‑based offerings have also been made available through Informatica’s broader cloud platform.

Licensing and Availability

ActiveVOS is distributed under a proprietary software license. Licenses are generally sold per‑server or per‑user, with additional modules available for enterprise‑level monitoring and integration.
