Achí, Bolívar

Achí is a municipality and town located in the Bolívar Department of Colombia, situated in the Caribbean Region of the country. The municipality lies on the banks of the Cauca River and borders the Sucre Department within the Momposina Depression.

Geography

Achí is one of 46 municipalities in the Bolívar Department. It shares borders with the municipalities of Magangué to the north; Pinillos and Tiquisio to the east; Montecristo and San Jacinto del Cauca to the south; and the Sucre Department (municipalities of Majagual and Guaranda) to the west.

Climate
Achí experiences a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen classification Am), characterized by a pronounced rainy season and high temperatures throughout the year.

History
The origins of the settlement trace back to the former town of Ojolargo, founded on 24 September 1770 near the present‑day village of Mao, about 6 km from modern Achí. By 1779 Ojolargo had 471 inhabitants. In 1814 a cholera epidemic prompted the relocation of the population to the present site of Achí.

Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock, and fishing, taking advantage of the fertile floodplains of the Cauca River and the surrounding wetlands.
