Definition
Aceh Jaya Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Aceh Jaya) is an administrative regency of Aceh Province, Indonesia, located on the western coast of the island of Sumatra.
Overview
Formed on 10 April 2002 from the northern districts of West Aceh Regency, Aceh Jaya covers an area of approximately 3,872 km². The regency’s administrative centre is the town of Calang, situated in Krueng Sabee District. Population estimates have risen from 76,782 at the 2010 Census to 93,159 at the 2020 Census, with a mid‑2024 estimate of about 101,400 inhabitants. The region lies in the Indonesia Western Standard Time zone (UTC+7) and uses the telephone area code +62 654.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Aceh Jaya” combines the provincial name “Aceh” with the Indonesian word jaya, meaning “victorious” or “glorious.” While this literal translation is widely accepted, specific historical reasoning for the choice of “Jaya” in the regency’s name is not documented in publicly available sources.
Characteristics
-
Geography: Situated on the west side of Sumatra, the regency includes coastal lowlands, riverine areas, and inland hills. It borders the Indian Ocean to the west and is traversed by several rivers, the largest being the Calang River.
-
Administrative divisions: As of the 2020 Census, Aceh Jaya is divided into nine districts (kecamatan): Teunom, Pasie Raya, Krueng Sabee, Setia Bhakti, Sampoi Niet, Darul Hikmah, Jaya, Indra Jaya, and Lamno. These districts encompass a total of 107 villages (gampong).
-
Economy: The local economy is primarily agricultural. Major crops include rice, rubber, palm oil, coconut, and fruit trees such as rambutan, durian, orange, and watermelon. Small‑scale fishing and aquaculture also contribute to livelihoods along the coast.
-
History: The regency was heavily affected by the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which devastated Calang and surrounding coastal communities. Reconstruction efforts, supported by the Indonesian government and international agencies, have gradually restored housing, infrastructure, and public services. By late 2006, significant rebuilding of Calang had been completed.
-
Demographics: The population is ethnically diverse, with the majority identifying as Acehnese. Islam is the predominant religion, reflecting the broader religious composition of Aceh Province.
