Académicos de Atlas

Académicos de Atlas was a Mexican association football club that operated as the reserve team of Atlas F.C. based in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The club was founded in 2000 and ceased operations in the mid‑2010s (sources differ on the exact year, citing both 2009 and 2016).

Club details

  • Full name: Académicos de Atlas
  • Nicknames: Los Zorros (The Foxes), Los Rojinegros (The Red‑blacks), La Academia (The Academy)
  • Home ground: Centro de Entrenamiento y Capacitación (CECAF) in Pénjamo, Guanajuato, with a capacity of approximately 1,000 spectators.

History
Académicos de Atlas first achieved prominence in the 2004–05 season of the Segunda División de México, winning both the Apertura and Clausura championships of Group Liguilla de Ascenso, which earned the club promotion to the Ascenso MX (the second tier of Mexican football).

In the 2005–06 season the team was relocated to Hermosillo, Sonora, and renamed Coyotes de Sonora, though it remained affiliated with Atlas. After a single season the club reverted to the name Académicos and returned to Jalisco, playing in Tonalá for the 2007–08 season and later in Guadalajara for the 2008–09 season.

Following a restructuring of the Primera División A (now Liga de Expansión MX), the reserve side was dissolved. Atlas continued to maintain youth and lower‑division squads, but the specific Académicos de Atlas entity was no longer active.

Honours

  • Segunda División de México: Apertura 2004, Clausura 2005 (Group Liguilla de Ascenso)
  • Tercera División de México: 1997–98, Apertura 2001

Legacy
As a reserve team, Académicos de Atlas functioned primarily to develop young players for the senior Atlas squad. Its brief period of competitive success in the mid‑2000s contributed to the development pipeline of one of Mexico’s traditional clubs.
