Definition
The Abadan Refinery is a large oil refining complex located in the city of Abadan, Khuzestan Province, Iran. It processes crude oil into a variety of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemical feedstocks.
Overview
Constructed in the early 20th century by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (later British Petroleum), the refinery became operational in 1912. At its peak, it was among the world’s largest single‑site refineries, with a processing capacity exceeding 500,000 barrels per day. The facility played a pivotal role in Iran’s oil industry and was a strategic asset during the nationalization of Iranian oil in the 1950s and the Iran–Iraq War (1980‑1988), during which it sustained substantial damage. Post‑war reconstruction restored much of its capacity, and the refinery remains a key component of Iran’s domestic fuel supply and export infrastructure.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Abadan” derives from the Persian word ‘آبادان’ (Ābādān), meaning “prosperous” or “populated,” reflecting the city's historical growth as a commercial and industrial hub. The term “refinery” denotes a plant where crude oil is chemically processed into refined products.
Characteristics
- Location: Situated on the northern shore of the Shatt al‑Arab waterway, adjacent to the Persian Gulf, facilitating maritime crude import and product export.
- Processing Capacity: Varies with operational upgrades; recent estimates indicate a capacity of roughly 380,000–400,000 barrels per day.
- Units and Facilities: Includes atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, catalytic cracking units, hydrocracking, reformers, alkylation, desulfurization units, and a petrochemical complex producing aromatics and polymers.
- Ownership and Management: Operated by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), a subsidiary of the state-owned National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
- Environmental Measures: Implements sulfur reduction and wastewater treatment systems in line with domestic regulations; however, detailed emissions data are limited in publicly available sources.
