Aaron ha-Cohen (Gaon)

Aaron ha-Cohen (Gaon) (Hebrew: אהרן הכהן) was a prominent Gaon of the Pumbedita Academy in Babylonia during the 10th century CE. Details regarding his life are scarce, but he is known to have served as Gaon, succeeding Hai ben David, likely in the mid-1030s. He played a significant role in the ongoing scholarly activities of the academy, issuing responsa on a wide range of legal and theological questions submitted by Jewish communities throughout the diaspora. While very few of his responsa are extant under his explicit name, scholars attribute several anonymous responsa from the period to him based on their style, content, and the historical context. His gaonate represented a period of continued, although declining, influence for the Babylonian academies.
