Aaron Teitelbaum (born October 20, 1947), also known as Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, is one of the two Grand Rebbes of the Satmar Hasidic dynasty, a prominent and influential Hasidic group. He leads the larger faction of the Satmar community, primarily based in Kiryas Joel, New York, and is known for his strict adherence to traditional Satmar principles, including strong anti-Zionism and emphasis on insularity and religious purity.
Biography
Aaron Teitelbaum was born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest son of Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, who later became the Satmar Rebbe. His paternal grandfather was Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, the founder and first Grand Rebbe of the Satmar dynasty in the United States, and a towering figure in post-Holocaust Haredi Judaism. From a young age, Aaron was immersed in the strict educational and religious environment of the Satmar community. He studied in Satmar yeshivas and quickly distinguished himself as a talmudic scholar.
He married Sasha Teitelbaum, the daughter of Rabbi Moses S. Teitelbaum of Kiviashd, a prominent figure in his own right. In the early 1980s, his father, Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, appointed him as the head of the Satmar yeshiva in Kiryas Joel, New York, a village founded by his grandfather, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, and an increasingly important center of Satmar life. This appointment was widely seen as an indication that he was being groomed to succeed his father.
Succession Dispute and Leadership
The succession to the leadership of the Satmar dynasty became a contentious issue in the late 1990s and early 2000s, especially as his father's health declined. While Rabbi Aaron was the eldest son and had been publicly designated by his father as his successor, a significant portion of the community, particularly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, began to gravitate towards his younger brother, Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum. The dispute escalated into a bitter power struggle, dividing the Satmar Hasidic community into two main factions:
- Aronim: Followers of Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, primarily centered in Kiryas Joel, Monsey, and parts of Brooklyn.
- Zalonim: Followers of Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum, primarily centered in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Following the passing of their father, Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, in 2006, the split became formalized. Both brothers claimed the mantle of Satmar Rebbe. Rabbi Aaron leads the Kiryas Joel-based faction, which is generally considered the larger of the two. Under his leadership, the Kiryas Joel community has continued to grow rapidly, expanding its institutions, yeshivas, and social services. He exerts significant influence over the political and social life within the ultra-Orthodox enclaves where his followers reside.
Teachings and Ideology
Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum continues to uphold the core tenets of Satmar Hasidism, as established by his grandfather, Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum. These include:
- Anti-Zionism: A steadfast and vocal opposition to the State of Israel and its secular Zionistic ideology, viewing it as a sacrilege and an impediment to the coming of the Messiah.
- Strict Adherence to Halakha (Jewish Law): Emphasis on scrupulous observance of Jewish law, minhagim (customs), and rabbinic decrees.
- Community Insularity: A strong focus on maintaining the distinct identity and purity of the Satmar community, minimizing interaction with the outside world and resisting assimilation.
- Yiddish Language: Promoting Yiddish as the primary language of daily life and religious study within the community.
His leadership is characterized by a firm and uncompromising approach to these principles, guiding his large following in their daily lives and communal affairs.
