Aaron Moorehead (born May 16, 1977) is an American former professional football player and current football coach. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) and later transitioned to coaching at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Early life and education
Moorehead was born in Aurora, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign, where he played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini. During his collegiate career, he was noted for his receiving abilities and contributed to the team’s offense as a tight end.
Professional playing career
Moorehead entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2000, signing with the Indianapolis Colts. He played for the Colts from 2000 to 2004, contributing primarily on special teams and as a backup tight end. In 2005, he signed with the Detroit Lions, where he played for one season before retiring from active play.
Coaching career
After retiring from playing, Moorehead pursued a coaching career. He began as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa in 2007. He later served as a wide receivers coach at Eastern Illinois University (2008–2015) and held positions with the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant special teams coach (2016) and tight ends coach (2017–2020). In 2021, Moorehead was hired as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners football program.
Personal life
Aaron Moorehead is the son of former NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Dan Moorehead. He is married and has children. Outside of football, he has participated in charitable activities, including youth mentorship programs.
