6th Amphibious Division

Overview
The 6th Amphibious Division is a formation of the Nigerian Army established to conduct amphibious warfare, combined‑arms operations, coastal defence, and security missions in the Niger Delta region. Headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the division is tasked with providing security at ports and shore installations, conducting reconnaissance, and supporting operations in desert, jungle, and riverine environments.

History
The division was created on 8 November 2016, with operational effect from 7 November 2016, as part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to improve internal security in the Niger Delta. The establishment aimed to address challenges such as oil theft, militancy, and communal conflicts in the four Niger Delta states under its area of responsibility. Major‑General K. I. Abdulkarim served as the first General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division.
