4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union)

The 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Raised primarily from East Tennessee, a region with strong Unionist sympathies, the regiment played a significant role in operations in Tennessee and parts of Georgia and Alabama.

History

The 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was organized at Nashville, Tennessee, between December 1862 and March 1863. Many of its recruits were Unionists from East Tennessee who had made their way through Confederate lines to join the Union cause. The regiment was primarily engaged in scouting, raiding, and anti-guerrilla operations in its home state, often operating in areas contested by both Union and Confederate forces.

Key engagements and service periods for the 4th Tennessee Cavalry included:

  • December 1862 – March 1863: Organization and training at Nashville.
  • Mid-1863: Garrison duty and scouting in Middle Tennessee. Participated in expeditions against Confederate cavalry and guerrillas.
  • August – September 1863: Played a role in the Chickamauga Campaign, particularly in holding flanks and scouting.
  • November 1863: Involved in the operations around Knoxville, Tennessee, including the defense against Longstreet's siege.
  • 1864: Continued to be active in East Tennessee, conducting reconnaissance, protecting Union lines of communication, and engaging in skirmishes with Confederate forces. Many of its men were well-acquainted with the local terrain, making them effective in their operations.
  • March 1865: Saw service in the final campaigns in Alabama, particularly associated with Wilson's Raid.
  • June 17, 1865: Mustered out of service at Nashville, Tennessee.

Organization

The regiment typically consisted of ten companies, designated A through K (excluding J). Its strength varied over time due to casualties, disease, and desertions, as well as new enlistments. Like most cavalry units, it was armed with a mix of carbines, revolvers, and sabers.

Commanders

  • Colonel Isaac R. Hawkins: The primary commander for much of the regiment's existence.

Legacy

The 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) is remembered as one of the several Union regiments raised from within a Confederate state, illustrating the divided loyalties of the border regions during the Civil War. Its service was crucial in maintaining Union control and influence in East Tennessee and in supporting larger Union Army operations in the Western Theater.
