The 4th Norwegian Division was an army unit of the Norwegian Army, responsible for the defense of the Hordaland region. During the Second World War and the German invasion of Norway in 1940, the division was mobilized with a strength of approximately 6,361 soldiers and 551 horses. The division saw combat in the Vestland region, notably defending the town of Voss and securing the Bergen railway line. After losing Voss, the division fell back to defend the Sognefjord area until May 1940, when its commanding officer, Major General William Steffens, ordered his troops to disband. Steffens later joined the Norwegian forces in exile and served as military attaché to the Soviet Union in 1941. The 4th Division was primarily an administrative and territorial command formation, as Norwegian divisions of the period functioned more as administrative units rather than field combat formations comparable to those of other major powers.
