38 Special (often stylized as .38 Special) is an American rock band that was formed by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida. The band is known for its distinctive blend of Southern rock with arena rock and AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) influences, achieving significant commercial success in the late 1970s and 1980s.
History
- Formation and Early Years (1974–1976): The band was founded by Donnie Van Zant, the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant, and Don Barnes. They initially performed in local clubs and developed their sound, which blended elements of Southern rock with more melodic and accessible rock styles. They signed with A&M Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1977.
- Rise to Prominence (1977–1982): Their early albums, 38 Special (1977) and Special Delivery (1978), established their Southern rock roots. However, it was with the addition of keyboardist and songwriter Jim Peterik (formerly of Survivor) as a collaborator that the band began to shift towards a more polished, radio-friendly sound. This direction paid off with Rockin' into the Night (1979) and especially Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (1981), which featured the hit singles "Hold On Loosely" and "Fantasy Girl."
- Commercial Peak (1982–1989): The album Special Forces (1982) continued their success with tracks like "Caught Up in You" and "If I'd Been the One." Their most commercially successful album was Tour de Force (1983), which included the power ballad "If I'd Been the One" and "Back Where You Belong." Their 1986 album, Strength in Numbers, featured the hit "Second Chance," their highest-charting single, reaching number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
- Later Years and Continued Activity (1990–Present): Despite lineup changes and the evolving music landscape, 38 Special has continued to tour and record. Donnie Van Zant retired from touring in 2013 due to health issues, leaving Don Barnes as the sole continuous original member. The band maintains a consistent touring schedule, performing their catalogue of hits for audiences globally.
Musical Style
38 Special's music is characterized by its dual-guitar attack, melodic hooks, and strong vocal harmonies. While rooted in Southern rock, they successfully incorporated elements of arena rock, AOR, and pop rock, which contributed to their widespread commercial appeal. Their songs often feature driving rhythms, anthemic choruses, and guitar solos.
