34th Division (Imperial Japanese Army)

Definition
The 34th Division (第34師団, Dai‑san‑jū‑yon Shidan) was an infantry division of the Imperial Japanese Army, active from 1939 to 1946. It was nicknamed the “Camellia Division” (椿兵団, Tsubaki Heidan).

Overview
Formed on 2 July 1939 in Osaka as a triangular division, the 34th Division drew its manpower primarily from Osaka and Wakayama prefectures. Initially assigned to the Japanese 11th Army, it served as a garrison force in occupied central China, maintaining public order and supporting police duties. Throughout World War II the division participated in several major campaigns of the Second Sino‑Japanese War, including the Battle of Zaoyang‑Yichang (1940), the Battle of Shanggao (1941), the Battle of Changsha (1942), Operation Ichi‑Go (1944), and the Battle of West Hunan (1945). Following Japan’s surrender on 15 August 1945, the division surrendered near Jiujiang on the Yangtze River and was demobilized in early 1946.

Etymology / Origin
The division’s call sign, “Camellia Division,” derives from the camellia flower (椿, tsubaki), a symbol often associated with Japan. Its Japanese designation, 第34師団 (Dai‑san‑jū‑yon Shidan), simply denotes it as the 34th infantry division.
