The 2024 Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election was a local government election held in Elpitiya, Sri Lanka, on 26 October 2024, to elect 30 members to the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha. A total of 55,643 registered voters were eligible across 17 constituencies, with a voter turnout of 66.18%.
Background
The previous election in 2019 saw the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) win 17 out of 29 seats with 56.31% of the vote. The council's term ended on 6 March 2024, after experiencing continuous political and administrative challenges, including the rejection of the budget four times and the appointment of a special commissioner under the Provincial Council Act. On 12 September 2024, the Election Commission announced the election date of 26 October 2024.
Contesting Parties
Eight political parties and one independent group fielded a total of 279 candidates. The contesting parties included the National People's Power (NPP), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), People's Alliance (PA), People's United Freedom Alliance (PUFA), National People's Party (NPP), Devana Parapura, Janasetha Peramuna, and one independent group.
Results
The National People's Power (NPP) emerged as the largest party, winning 15 out of 30 seats with 17,295 votes (47.64% of the valid vote). The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 6 seats with 7,924 votes (21.83%). The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) won 3 seats with 3,597 votes (9.91%). The People's Alliance won 2 seats, an independent group won 2 seats, the People's United Freedom Alliance won 1 seat, and the National People's Party won 1 seat. Devana Parapura and Janasetha Peramuna failed to win any seats.
Post-Election
On 8 November 2024, the Election Commission of Sri Lanka confirmed the appointments of NPP's Kolamba Thanthreege Nishantha Perera as chairman and Wagoda Pathirage Sumith Chandana as vice chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha.
