2023–24 BCHL season

League Structure and Changes

The 2023–24 season began with 17 teams based in British Columbia. However, a major development occurred mid-season when five Alberta-based teams – the Brooks Bandits, Okotoks Oilers, Sherwood Park Crusaders, Spruce Grove Saints, and Blackfalds Bulldogs (originally announced as the Olds Grizzlys, but later revised to Spruce Grove Saints and Blackfalds Bulldogs taking the fifth spot for some announcements, though the final confirmed list from AJHL defectors was Bandits, Oilers, Crusaders, Saints, and Bulldogs) – announced their intention to depart the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and join the BCHL for the 2024–25 season, effective January 2024. For the remainder of the 2023–24 season, these five Alberta teams participated in a limited capacity, playing exhibition games under BCHL rules, but did not compete for the Fred Page Cup, which remained exclusively contested by the 17 BC-based teams.

The 17 BC teams were divided into two conferences: the Coastal Conference and the Interior Conference.

Regular Season

The regular season commenced in September 2023 and concluded in March 2024. Teams played a 54-game schedule within their respective conferences and across the league.

Coastal Conference Standings (Top Teams):

  1. Surrey Eagles
  2. Victoria Grizzlies
  3. Nanaimo Clippers

Interior Conference Standings (Top Teams):

  1. Penticton Vees
  2. Merritt Centennials
  3. Salmon Arm Silverbacks

The Surrey Eagles finished with the best overall regular season record in the league, securing the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy as regular season champions.

Playoffs (Fred Page Cup)

The playoffs, culminating in the Fred Page Cup, began in late March 2024. The 17 BC teams competed in a traditional playoff bracket within their conferences, with the two conference champions advancing to the league championship series.

Conference Finals:

  • Coastal Conference Final: Surrey Eagles defeated the Victoria Grizzlies.
  • Interior Conference Final: Salmon Arm Silverbacks defeated the Penticton Vees.

The Interior Conference Final saw the Salmon Arm Silverbacks upset the defending champion Penticton Vees, who had been a dominant force in recent BCHL seasons.

Fred Page Cup Final: The Surrey Eagles faced the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in the best-of-seven Fred Page Cup Final. The Eagles, coming off a strong regular season and Coastal Conference championship, ultimately defeated the Silverbacks to claim their third Fred Page Cup championship in franchise history.

Notable Events

The primary notable event of the 2023–24 season was the departure of five Alberta-based teams from the AJHL to join the BCHL. This move, announced in January 2024, marked a significant expansion for the BCHL and created a new dynamic for junior hockey in Western Canada, leading to changes in both leagues. The immediate impact on the 2023–24 BCHL season was primarily structural, with the league preparing for a 22-team format in the subsequent season.
