2020 Copa do Nordeste

The 2020 Copa do Nordeste was the 17th edition of the Copa do Nordeste, a regional knockout football competition organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Northeast Football Union (UNNE). The tournament featured sixteen clubs from Brazil's Northeast Region and served as a qualifier for the 2021 Copa do Brasil.

Format

  • Teams: 16 clubs qualified through a combination of state league performance and a preliminary qualifying tournament (the “Pré‑Copa do Nordeste”).
  • Group stage: The teams were divided into two groups (Group A and Group B) of eight clubs each. Each club played a single round‑robin against the eight teams from the opposite group, resulting in eight matches per side.
  • Advancement: The four highest‑placed teams in each group progressed to the knockout phase.
  • Knockout phase: Quarter‑finals, semi‑finals and the final were contested as single‑leg matches, with the higher‑ranked team (or a pre‑determined higher‑seed) hosting the fixture.

Schedule
The competition was originally slated for early 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. It officially commenced on 26 July 2020 and concluded with the final on 29 August 2020. All matches were played behind closed doors in accordance with public‑health regulations.

The tournament also highlighted the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic on Brazilian football, with adjusted scheduling, health protocols, and matches without spectators.
