The 2019 Yamagata earthquake was a seismic event that occurred in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, on 1 June 2019. The earthquake struck at 02:20 JST (17:20 UTC on 31 May) with an initial magnitude of 5.6 M_w, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The hypocenter was located offshore, approximately 30 km west of the city of Tsuruoka at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake originated within the complex tectonic regime of the western margin of the Japanese archipelago, where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Plate.
