The 2017–18 Taça de Portugal was the 78th edition of Portugal's premier knockout football cup competition, organised by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The tournament began on 9 September 2017 and concluded with the final on 20 May 2018 at the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras.
Participating clubs
A total of 153 teams entered the competition, comprising all clubs from the Primeira Liga (18), LigaPro (22), and a selection of clubs from the Campeonato de Portugal and various district leagues.
Format
The competition followed a single‑elimination format. All rounds were contested as one‑off matches; if a match was level after 90 minutes, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot‑out were used to determine the winner. The draw for each round was unseeded, with the exception of the first round, in which teams from the top two tiers entered at later stages.
Progression
Early rounds involved lower‑division clubs, with Primeira Liga teams joining in the third round. The competition proceeded through the fourth round, quarter‑finals, and semi‑finals, each round halving the number of remaining teams.
Final
The final was contested on 20 May 2018 between C.D. Aves and Sporting CP. C.D. Aves secured their first Taça de Portugal title, defeating Sporting CP 2–1 after extra time. The victory qualified Aves for the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League play‑off round.
Defending champion
Vitória de Guimarães entered the tournament as the defending champions, having won the 2016–17 edition. They were eliminated in the semi‑finals by Sporting CP.
